Sure. First I'd pin down the scale — say a hundred million new links a day, read far more than written, maybe a hundred to one — so the whole design leans on making the redirect fast and cheap.

The API is two endpoints: a POST that takes the long URL, generates a short code, stores the mapping, and returns the link; and a GET on that code that looks up the original and returns a 301 redirect. I'd use a 301 so the browser caches it and repeat hits skip our servers — or a 302 if we need to count every click.

For the code itself, I'd base62-encode a global auto-increment ID. Seven characters covers about 3.5 trillion links with no collisions. If one counter became a bottleneck, I'd hand each server its own ID range, or hash the URL and retry on the rare clash.

The mapping lives in a key-value store like DynamoDB, partitioned by code so every lookup is one fast read. Since reads dominate, a Redis cache in front keeps hot links resolving in well under a millisecond.

To scale, the API stays stateless behind a load balancer, redirects are served through a CDN, the database gets read replicas, and click events go onto an async queue like Kafka so analytics and rate-limiting never slow the redirect. From there, custom aliases, link expiry, and abuse detection are natural follow-ups.
